We hopped off the jungle line at Kluang so that we could make our way to Tioman . There was no info in the lonely planet about this town so we were a little unsure of it’s size or accomodation options but looking at the map of Malaysia it looked like the best option for our transfer . Kluang is a big town and had everything we needed . On arrival at the station we were approached by a guy who was operating a private taxi ( unlicenced like most of these jungle line towns ) and after 10 mins of him trying to persuade us to let him take us on the 2 ½ hour trip to Mershing port that evening for his “very cheap” rate of 220 ringits , he finally gave into bringing us to a good budget hotel so that we could overnight and refuel after our 5 hour train trip from Kuala Lipis .
We have put our trust into the taxi drivers in Malaysia in bringing us to the better budget hotels as they know the towns . Malaysia is a safe country and our experience of traveling in highly populated Muslim societies is positive . He brought us to the White House Hotel which was clean with free wifi ,well priced at 63 ringit and run by very friendly Chinese Malays , perfect for the night . Most small town hotels give a commission to the drivers which worked fine for us .
That night we headed over to the night market and filled up with delicious food and freshly made juices from a indonesian malay family stall .
The next day we decided to get a private coach to Mersing instead of calling our friendly driver as it was only a 2.5 hour drive and the ticket price on the private coach was 40 ringit ( 10 euro ) for the four of us compared to our helpful drivers “ very cheap “ price .
The bus journey was plesant and we arrived into mersing in time for the 4 pm boat to Tioman which unfortunatly was cancelled due to low tide . This didn’t bother us as we stayed over in Mersing and caught the following mornings boat to the island .
