The rickshaw chase in one of the Roger Moore Bond movies was filmed in Udaipur and you can understand why. It is a magical place. Built around the shores of Lake Pichola and encircled by green hills. Ornate palaces and havelli’s surround the lake and in the case of The Lake Palace Hotel float mysteriously on it.
We hit jackpot with our hotel the Mahendra Prakash which is an old havali owed by one of the extended maharaja families. Beautilful old house with garden pool , individually designed bedrooms , three resident turtles and breakfast , lunch and dinner served poolside .The place was spotless and the ambiance was excellent .
We met a like minded couple staying there, Giles and Pepi Horton and their daughter Daisy. Giles is/was in advertising and was halfway through a 6 month Indian odyssey. They were an invaluable source of top class information for us as they have done the indian thing before. They are travelling in the same way as us, pretty budget consious but not slumming it . We had a couple of good nights with the Horton’s and found we had quite a bit in common. Our initial saying hello at the pool ended in joining tables and having a laugh , Giles is a very funny man and the gorgeous Pipa a dote .
Our favoirite of all of our dining experiences was in the very lovely Ambrai in the Amet Haveli hotel on the lake, it was probably the most romantic setting we have eaten in so far, it really was beautiful. Axel and Elka, our very own contraceptives joined us. Our meal was accompanied by a seriously good sitar and tabla combo along with some seriously big bats.
On leaving Udaipur Axel was extremely sad, he had become very pally with Daisy and was upset at having to leave his friend behind but hopefully we will see them again .
Udaiapur being one of he cleaner cities we have visited is definatey on our “ will return list “ and already we are looking forward to it .
